In 1992-93 the shipyard performed the project of modernising eight «Volzhskiy» type vessels (length of 140 m, width of 16.7 m, load capacity of 5,000 tons). Vessels idling earlier for more than half a year after termination of navigation now could be used all year round including in the Black, Mediterranean and Baltic seas which made the effectiveness of their exploitation several times as big as earlier.
The technical idea of the modernisation lied in giving a vessel strength of the hull necessary for sea navigation on account of producing and assembling new coamings of holds, increasing the quantity of watertight compartments, additional equipping with equipment and systems necessary under sea conventions and rules (an emergency diesel-generator, emergency fire pump, system of global satellite communication, free fall life boat, system of aerosol fire extinguishing etc.).
According to the tradition the modernised vessels got names of our compatriots, honoured people from the «White Sea and Onega shipping company». The head vessel of the line got the name «Dmitry Varvarin», that of the founder of the Concern «Orimi».
